Analysis: Mathis made the same salary in 2015, when he was limited to 32 games because he missed nearly two months due to a broken finger. He batted only .161 and is a .194 career hitter. But the 11-year veteran provides experience behind Realmuto, who hit .259 with 10 homers as a rookie.

Analysis: Mathis, 32, broke his right hand early in the season and was placed on the disabled list April 13. He had just six plate appearances in five games while serving as the backup catcher.
